History of Test Cricket

                 
                                       Soon after the establishment of BCCI, Col. C.K. India became a Test-playing country under his captaincy. Naidu in 1932. India lost the Test against mighty England by 187 runs. After 20 years, India registered their first Test victory. He won the final Test of the 5-match Test series against England at Chennai by an innings and 8 runs. In the same year, India defeated their new neighbor Pakistan 2–1 to win their first Test series. In 1967–1968, India defeated New Zealand 3–1 in a 4-match Test series to win their first Test series. Off-break bowler Erapalli Prasanna took 24 wickets in this tour at an average of 18.79. From 1970-71 to 1973, India won 3 Test series including 1 against West Indies and back-to-back series against England.

                                           In Port of Spain, the team registered its highest successful run chase in the fourth innings at 406 for the loss of 4 wickets. Ajit Wadekar led India to win their first Test series in India on the 1971 tour. With Test cricket blossoming, India failed to consolidate its weight all over the world. They could not win a series out often between 1982 and 1985-86. But the table changed in 1992–93 when a new generation of players won 7 out of 10 series and lost only one. One of the most memorable victories for India came against Australia in 2001.

                                            After facing a follow-on in the first innings, India posted an impressive total of 657 for 7 in the second innings with the help of 281 runs from VVS Laxman and 190 runs from Rahul Dravid. They beat Australia by 171 runs. Eventually, India went up with a 2-1 series win. Over the years, India has achieved a lot in Test cricket. He held the Test Mace (rank one in Test cricket) for five consecutive years. After losing the first Test in Australia in 2020-21, India pulled something out of the blue to register a 2-1 series win. They became the first Test team to win at the Australian Fort Gaba for more than 30 years. India qualified for the first Test Championship final organized by the ICC but eventually lost to New Zealand. India has played 551 Tests so far. They have won 152, lost 170, drawn 1, and drawn on 170 occasions.
